We are learning about the Maya, Aztec, and Inca! Students are submitting their Mayan masks and they are looking so awesome. 
Students worked independently to do a directed drawing of a fall tree. They are turning out so great! 
Today we practiced our short vowel sounds and came up with words that have those sounds. In math, had a number talk where we came up with different ways to show the number 5.
As part of this year's literacy event, students met author and illustrator Elee Bordokas.  She read to the students and answered their questions! 
 
As part of this year's literacy event, students read a book by author and illustrator Elee Bordokas.  Following the story, students drew one of the main characters and wrote about what they would do if they were that character.  Elee will be here next week to read to the students and answer their questions! 
As part of our culmination to the Early American Civilizations domain, I shared some photos and stories from my trip to Peru with both First Grade classes!
Today we learned about Moctezuma the Second, emperor of the Aztec people.  He wore a headdress made of gold.  Students made their own headdresses today. 
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows!
 
Students drew Rudolph and then used crayons and paint to complete their art. 
Students created self-portraits inspired by the work of Frida Kahlo. We learned  about Frida Kahlo and discussed her use of nature in her art. 
We turned lemons into lemonade when the power went out!  Students had a chance to journal outside on the grass.
